“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.”
– Matthew 5:17
After the resurrection, the Bible records that Jesus “opened the Scriptures” to the disciples. Have you ever wonders which verses Jesus used to explain to them “what was said in all the Scriptures” concerning himself? The Bible doesn’t tell us exactly which Old Testament verses Jesus talks about, but the follow list outlines some OT verses that anticipate the birth, life, death, and resurrection of the Messiah:
Promise | Old Testament Anticipation | New Testament Revelation |

The Lamb of God | He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. (Isaiah 53:7) | The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.” But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. (Mark 15:4-5) |
Messiah will be meek | He will not shout or cry out, or raise his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice. (Isaiah 42:2-3) | “Here is my servant whom I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight; I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim justice to the nations. He will not quarrel or cry out; no one will hear his voice in the streets. A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till he leads justice to victory.” (Matthew 12:18-20) |
Rejected by men | He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. (Isaiah 53:3) | He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him (John 1:11). With one voice they cried out, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” (Luke 23:18). |
Reject by his people | The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone,(Isaiah 40:3-5) | He is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. (Acts 4:11) |
Abandoned by his own disciples | “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the LORD Almighty. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.” (Zechariah 13:7) | Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’”,(Matthew 26:31) |
Betrayed by Judas | Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. (Psalm 41:9) | While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” (Luke 22:47-48; John 13:18-19) |
Betrayed for thirty silver coins | I told them, “If you think it best, give me my pay; but if not, keep it.” So they paid me thirty pieces of silver. (Zechariah 11:12) | Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty silver coins. (Matthew 26:14-15) |
Blood money used to buy Potter’s Field | And the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the handsome price at which they priced me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the LORD to the potter. (Zechariah 11:13) | And the chief priests took the pieces of silver and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the temple treasury, since it is the price of blood.” And they counseled together and with the money bought the Potter’s Field as a burial place for strangers. (Matthew 27:6-7) |
Falsely accused | Ruthless witnesses come forward; they question me on things I know nothing about. (Psalms 35:11) | And some stood up and began to give false testimony against Him, saying, “We heard Him say, `I will destroy this temple made with hands, and in three days I will build another made without hands.’” (Mark 14:57-58) |
Christ would be humiliated | I gave My back to those who strike Me, and My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6) | Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him and said, “Prophesy to us, Christ. Who hit you?” (Matthew 26:67-68) |
He would be mocked | All who see me sneer at me; they separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, “Commit yourself to the LORD; let Him deliver him; let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.” (Psalms 22:7-8) | And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.” (Luke 23:35) |
Given Vinegar | They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. (Psalms 69:21) | After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, in order that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I am thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop, and brought it up to His mouth. (John 19:28-29) |
Soldiers gamble for his cloths | I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; they divide my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots. (Psalms 22:17-18) | And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves, casting lots; and sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. (Matthew 27:35-36) |
Christ would be scourged | But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5) | Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified. (Matthew 27:26) |
His followers will weep | “And I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the Spirit of grace and of supplication, so that they will look on Me whom they have pierced; and they will mourn for Him, as one mourns for an only son, and they will weep bitterly over Him, like the bitter weeping over a first-born. (Zechariah 12:10) | Then the disciples went back to their homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying.,(John 20:10) |
Friends stood afar | My loved ones and my friends stand aloof from my plague; And my kinsmen stand afar off. (Psalms 38:11) | And all His acquaintances and the women who accompanied Him from Galilee, were standing at a distance, seeing these things. (Luke 23:49) |

Committed his spirit to God | Into Thy hand I commit my spirit; Thou hast ransomed me, O Lord, God of truth. (Psalms 31:5) | And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Thy hands I commit My spirit.” And having said this, He breathed His last. (Luke 23:46) |
No bones would be broken | He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken. (Psalms 34:20) | The soldiers therefore came, and broke the legs of the first man, and of the other man who was crucified with Him; but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs... For these things came to pass, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, “Not a bone of Him shall be broken.” (John 19:32, 33, 36) |
Buried in a rich man’s tomb | His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He was with a rich man in His death, because He had done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His mouth. (Isaiah 53:9) | And when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given over to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb... (Matthew 27:57-60) |
The intercessor for our sins | Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:12) | Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. (Romans 8:34) |
