THE COMMON expression “the silence spoke louder than words” must have been true at Christ’s birth. As Joseph and Mary gazed at baby Jesus, they must have basked in the universal wonder of seeing the tender hands and tiny feet of a newborn baby “knit together by the hands of God” (Psalm 139:13). And yet, even in the long silence of that moment shared by millions, the air must have been thick with a very special unspoken understanding: God himself had invaded humanity! For the first time since the beginning of the world, we could now see God’s face, touch his hands, and hear his voice. No more pesky doubts if He exists and no more fear that God is “distant.” He is not distant! He is here with us! And His name is Emmanuel!
